Magnetic resonance imaging MRI in combination with mammography is a very effective tool in detecting breast tumors at early stages of their development. Thus, this procedure can significantly reduce the incidence of deep breast cancer.

Recall, it is assumed that the early stage of development of the above-mentioned cancer - can be cured. For this reason, according to scientists, the discovery of ailment in the early stages of its development ensures a high probability of curing patients.

In order to test the effectiveness of MRI combined with mammography researchers conducted an experiment. It was attended by 1275 women who were characterized by a high probability of breast cancer. They were divided into two groups. Women from the first group were examined with MRI and mammography, while a second group of women (control) was held only the procedure of mammography. It should be noted that women from both groups were mutant for one of two genes: BRCA1 or BRCA2. Mutations in these genes for evidence of the existence of a high risk of breast cancer in female carriers of any of these mutant genes. Research work was carried out over several years, during which women are seen by specialists.

Results

During the experiment using magnetic-resonance therapy in combination with mammography was identified 41 cases of neoplasms. In the control group were able to record 76 cases of cancer. However, it should be noted that the tumors diagnosed in women in the first group were much smaller in size compared with tumors detected in women in the control group (0.9 cm and 1.8 cm, respectively). Also in the first group had only 3% of tumors with diameters larger than 2 cm, while the second group, there were as many as 29% of tumors greater than a diameter of 2 cm in size
