The most powerful magnet for MRI weighs 45 tons

World's most powerful Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), used to study people, is equipped with 45-ton magnet that generates a field with magnetic induction 9.4 T. This exceeds the figure for the outer contour of the largest particle accelerator - the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), work out the 4 tesla. But instead of experiments in fundamental physics, tomography, University of Illinois in Chicago is used to visualize the penetration into the human brain.

With high-powered MRI scientists can measure the concentration of sodium, oxygen consumption and the number of cells in the brain of energy. Together, the three "bio scale" provide a detailed picture of the organ tissue, potentially allowing a notice neurodegenerative disorders long before symptoms appear. There are four such apparatus. Normal scanner generates no more than 3 tesla. A magnet, embedded in a variety of items that are placed on the refrigerator, have a magnetic induction of about 0.05 Tesla. "Without such a magnet, we would not have gone so far - the director of the Center for Magnetic Resonance (Center for Magnetic Resonance Research) at UIC. - It would take years and years to figure out how to overcome barriers in research with common 3-T diagnostic MRI. " Although the new magnet is impressive, it can not be compared with the static magnetic field, obtained in the National Laboratory for High Magnetic Fields (National High Magnetic Field Laboratory), University of Florida (Florida State University) in Talahassi - 45 tesla. In neutron stars - from 1 mT to 100 mT.

One survey in the X-ray machine gives you a charge of radiation, what would you have, being 2.4 km from Hiroshima in 1945. Than to replace it?
